Wow, The City Never Sleeps comes through with a great debut EP. These guys recently went through a name change, previously called Fourfit, but with a new name and a new album The City Never Sleeps is making a name for themselves in the indie rock scene.
This self titled EP opens with the song Hello Vice, a catchy danceable rock tune, with clever satirical lyrics, and solid guitar lines. The melody keeps the song's movement flowing, with a great chorus that creates a lasting value. Just about every song on this album I have found stuck in my head at some point since my first listen.
Straw Sticks Brick is the next track on the EP. This song is another great pop rock song. The texture on the album remains relatively simple with a standard rock quartet, two guitars, bass, drums, vocals and backing vocals, however they have a great ability to create unique pieces and elements in all of their songs. This second track, similar to the first one, is a catchy tune with a great up beat tone and inspiring chorus.
The third track keeps up the pace of the album, with another up beat indie rock tune. This song, entitled Luxuria, is a great example of the band's individuality. The track has an interesting guitar rhythm, and again just a perfect attention grabbing chorus. I commend these guys on their ability to compose outstanding hooks. The dueling vocals in the bridge of this track definitely stand out as a creative outlet for both of the singers, and they nailed it.
One of the things I love about this album is that this band is great as an acoustic outfit as well, and they take advantage of it. The fourth track on the album is an acoustic song titled Not Everyone Heals As Fast As You Logan. The ability to switch back and forth from full band to acoustic virtually seamlessly is quite impressive. Even acoustic the rhythmic tendencies on guitar remain, which brings a unique feel to their acoustic tracks. There's some solid gang vocals at the end of the song which I was skeptical about at first, but it really brings the song into its own.
We get back into the swing of the album with the next track, Make Sure It's Gone. This another demonstration of a solid pop punk song. I think despite the great chorus of this song, this is probably my least favorite track. Keep in mind I still enjoy the song, and I never skip it, but if I absolutely HAD to pick, it would be my least favorite.
Next we have the song Where The Streetlights, and feeling redundant now, I can't help but notice the rhythm within the guitars. The lead guitar line almost grabs as much attention as the vocal melody in the chorus which is one of the more frequent tunes I find myself humming. Another aspect of this song I love is that despite the pop punk classification would give this band, this song is a great display of some more ambiance. The ending part of the song definitely shows a different side of their creativity while keeping within the genre and style of the album as a whole.
The final track is another acoustic song called Heads You Win Tails I Lose. Just incredible talent on the guitars for this song; they really separate themselves from the masses with their guitar lines, even acoustically, which is one of the reasons I respect them so much. They feature a violinist in this track which really adds to its atmosphere and creates a nice "finisher" for the album.
Let that last track play for a little and you'll find an interesting bonus track, that's all I'll say.
Collectively this is a great album, original, inspiring, and cohesive. The songs are great, and the raw sound of the performances really gives the listener a closer attachment to the band and the music. I highly recommend this album, give it one listen and I promise you'll be coming back for more.
