Josh Mease's new album Wilderness, is certainly glowing with individuality to say the least. I didn't know what to expect when I first turned it on, but I was very impressed only a few songs in.
The indie pop artist uses arrangements and textures closer to jazz than anything, which highlights his unique sound. Interesting chord changes, and a wide use of piano throughout, separates this album from your everyday indie rock pop album. His songs are soft and soothing, yet incredibly intricate. The vocals are angelic, with an interesting combination of lyrical choice.
Definitely an album that could sing you to sleep, which I suppose is a good and bad thing. I appreciate the calmness of his songs, and for his sake, the ability to maintain such an atmosphere through the album. Each song is good in its own right, however, because of the soft slow movement, the album as a whole drags a bit. I was able to make it through the entire thing, but towards the end I found myself letting it become more background music.
After a complete album listen I went back and separately listened to the tracks. The songs really are amazing, but even too much of a good thing can be bad for you. The albums only flaw, is that with songs such as these, it's better to keep it short and sweet. Variation isn't always need if you;re willing to sacrifice quantity. I personally enjoy EPs and short albums, because I like knowing every song, and every part of albums.
No argument here that he is a talented song writer, love the tones, textures, and progressions of the songs. Overall each song is incredible, and so is the album, just becomes a bit difficult to make it all the way through without wanting to lay down.
