Jarrod Gorbel, 2010

Garrett Yaeger reviewed it on September 01, 2010.

Jarrod Gorbel has dropped the name "The Honorary Title" and decided to release this new record under his own name. This decision is an interesting one, The Honorary Title started as just him, but their latest release 'Scream and Light Up The Sky' was credited as a full band endeavor. This is a lighter produced, heavily acoustic indie pop record.

As far as songwriting goes, it's the same as any of the Honorary Title songs, but there is a certain distinction in production and embellishments. While for the most part the songs on this record are fantastic, there are tracks and parts of tracks that I think could have been done differently, and perhaps should have been. The last THT record was a very polished professionally produced major label release, perhaps that was spoiling. For example, two of my favorite tracks on the album, "I'll Do Better" and "Ten Years Older", are both very personal songs, but the production creates somewhat of a lack of intimacy with the subject matter. I prefer the live acoustic versions.

On the upside there are definitely some immediately catchy tunes and a great extension of his already outstanding repertoire. Without saying, any THT fan should pick up this album, but I also think this endeavor may help him reach a new market of listeners. I'm interested to see how well he will do without the Honorary Title Handle.
