Bristol UK indie rockers, Daylight Fireworks, recently released their EP 'Secretly, We Hope' for FREE on their website. At first I was skeptical, though intrigued, to find their first song being named "Daylight The Fireworks, Daylight The ****ing Fireworks" which is an instrumental introduction to the EP. Solid guitar tones, and some interesting chord choices create a pleasant experience leading up to a bold move at the end of the track, which I'll let you listen to if you want to find out what it is.
The next track "Cold Shoulder" comes in with a punch, and gives us our first taste of melody over crunchy indie pop guitar rhythms. This track creates a pretty noticeable contrast against the first track, only two tracks in but my attention is still very much captured.
The pace keeps up on the next major tune "Nothing To Do With Love", which could definitely be an indie rock radio tune. Poppy chord progression, and of course the anthem-style lyrics 'Nothing to do with love', instant sing along potential.
"You Know, You Know" brings a taste of electronics into the lineup. Personally not a fan of electro-synth sounds but due to it's growing popularity I certainly can't blame them for experimenting as well. The synth kind of steals the lead in this song, again changing the atmosphere on the album, but damn that is a catchy chorus.
Versatility and dynamics on an album are so incredibly important, which is why despite my dislike for electronics I loved "You Know You Know", especially as it leads into a slower tune on the track listing "You've Really Done It This time," where we hear some acoustic guitar and some shakers if I'm not mistaken. Kind of get a lounge rock feel on this track; the instrumental bridge is somewhat reminiscent of bands such as American Football.
The final track just furthers my desire to this band live. After hearing some incredible drumming on the entire album, which I need to see live, the final track "This Isn't Over" starts with a clapping rhythm, which I look forward to watching an audience butcher, (guaranteed to be a good time though). This track sums up the album nicely, ending with some gang vocals screaming 'this isn't over', even though it kind of is over, and then instrumental tremolo guitar ending.
The album keeps itself mostly within a single songwriting style, creating an easy continuity through the dynamic of each track. I'd love to hear the band do some more tracks such as the opener on this album; they certainly have some instrumental or post-rock potential, which is right up my alley. It's a solid indie-rock EP though, decent guitar tones and creative lines and rhythms, memorable vocals, great drumming, and of course complimenting bass lines.
As far as production, nothing to write home about, but I mean that in both ways, not a million dollar studio sound, but absolutely nothing to complain about either. I honestly think if they wanted to save some money, this band could jump right into the lo-fi trend and be pretty successful.
As described to me, it's an indie pop album with some grit, and I couldn't explain it better myself. The EP is FREE, no excuses, give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.
